Island of Stone Money: Uap of The Carolines Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

William Henry Furness III (August 10, 1866 - August 11, 1920) was an explorer, ethnographer, anthropologist and author from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Furness made four expeditions to Southeast Asia and Oceania between 1895 and 1901, accompanied by Hiram M. Hiller, Jr. and Alfred C. Harrison, Jr. They all received degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and donated or sold to the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology substantial collections of ethnographic, archaeological, and skeletal material acquired on the voyages.
He returned to the South Pacific in 1903, and spent several months among the people on the island of Yap (Uap). It is the habits and customs of this island he wrote about this fascinating book. He was particular impressed by the islanders’ monetary system, and accordingly gave his book the title “Island of Stone Money”. In his book he describes the extraordinary use of large stones as money. Little would he have known when publishing his book in 1910 that his work would become a ‘must read’ for economists today.

Excellent reproduction of original. No missing pages, good photos and drawings. I am glad I purchased this copy. All I had before was a photocopy of the book and the photos/drawings were in bad shape. I needed two of the photos for a research project and they came through in great condition.
